Gerichtliche Medizin

Traffic accidents resulting in injuries or even fatalities occur primarily in road traffic, less frequently in rail and air transport, and can sometimes be highly complex. The reconstruction of such accidents goes beyond a purely medical perspective: here, close cooperation between the public prosecutor’s office, the police, the technical expert, and the forensic medical service is essential. Over the decades, a networked approach to traffic accident reconstruction has been established among these institutions to ensure the most timely possible assessment of findings and close professional exchange during case handling.

The forensic medical assessment is based on a careful examination of the injury patterns in the accident victims, supplemented by a comparison with the damage patterns on the vehicles involved, and provides essential insights into the course of the accident.

The division focuses on the following issues

  • Analysis of injuries and injury patterns to reconstruct the course of the accident, e.g., determining the seating position of vehicle occupants, seat belt usage, and the position and direction of travel of injured or killed pedestrians, etc.
  • Collection of (potential) biological evidence at the accident scene, on and inside the vehicles involved, to identify the source of the evidence using molecular biological methods
  • Substance abuse, including calculation of the degree of intoxication, retroactive calculation of blood alcohol concentration at a specific time, and verification of statements regarding alcohol consumption

The application of medical knowledge and the specialized expertise of forensic medicine, taking biomechanics into account, contributes to improving traffic safety and thus also serves as a preventive measure.
