Gerichtliche Medizin

The Forensic Radiology Center at the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Medical University of Graz is a forensic medicine department specializing in forensic imaging.

Forensic imaging employs imaging (primarily radiological) methods to document and resolve forensic medical issues. This applies to both clinical and postmortem forensic medicine.

Among other things, we prepare written and oral expert opinions for public prosecutors and courts on the following topics in forensic imaging:

Gerichtsmedizin - Werner/adobestock.com
  • Forensic radiological reconstruction of injuries (cause and sequence of events)
  • Injury analysis for reconstructing accident and crime sequences (e.g., child abuse, direction and trajectory of a gunshot, direction and depth of a stab wound, location, direction, and force of an impact, etc.)
  • Causality assessment
  • Identifications
  • Estimation of the age of intracranial hemorrhages, e.g., following shaken baby syndrome or falls

To prepare forensic radiological reports, we require radiological images and findings from hospitals, radiology practices, or scans that we have specifically arranged. As part of the assessment, we conduct a forensic radiological re-evaluation, since clinical assessments (which have a different focus) generally do not meet the courts’ requirements or address the specific questions regarding the aforementioned evidence.
